19. Respond to the quote. “Everyone’s dreams are the same.” – Kira Yamato (from Gundam SEED Destiny)
What do people search for in life? What are human’s dreams? Humanity spends its life trying to find happiness, safety, and love. Throughout history it does not matter what side of the battlefield someone is standing on. If asked, ‘why do you fight?’ the person will respond with some variation of ‘for my family’ or ‘for my nation.’ Everyone in the world is looking for security; they are all looking for a world where they may live in peace. They are searching for a world of happiness and love.
Examine any war in history, even in World War II; all sides were, in a way, justified. The Allies were trying to stop the Axis from dominating the world, killing thousands of Jews, as well as their own countrymen or their own families. The Allied governments brought their people together to fight against domination by the Axis powers. Allied governments were searching for safety, and the only way to achieve it was to fight.
The Axis powers also sought safety. After World War I, the people of Germany were forced into a humiliating submission that did not allow them to provide for their people. Germany was the bottom of the food chain until the people turned to Hitler to save them from starvation. I am not saying that Hitler had the right to do what he did, but I am saying I can understand why at first glance the people of Germany followed Hitler. They saw a man who promised them freedom from oppression. Hitler offered stability, or in other words, safety. Japan was also looking to expand its empire to help its economic situation. Japan had few raw materials, so it could not survive for very long in the new industrial world. Every nation had its own reasons for joining World War II; they all joined because each country was looking for safety.
I truly believe that every person’s dream is the same. Everyone wants safety and security so that they may live in peace. I just hope that someday everyone understands that a person, no matter how different, is longing for the same world. Only then can the world work together.
